• ERA brings together the creative parties who own rights in broadcasts and the material included within broadcasts, protecting their ability to derive an income for the ongoing use of their work.

  • ERA is a not-for-profit organisation – we pay the licence fees we receive to our Members, retaining only what we need to cover administration.

  • ERA Licence holders can stream our Members’ broadcast content for free through our award-winning platforms: the Video Streaming Platform and the Natural Curriculum.

The ‘legal making of recordings’ covers:

  • Storing recordings or copies of broadcasts including old DVD and VHS recordings and/or making such recordings or copies available to teachers and students for educational purposes;
  • downloading or watching, for educational purposes, recordings of broadcasts including audio or audio-visual material on ERA Members’ catch-up services where the terms and conditions cross-refer to the ERA Licence;
  • programmes and clips of broadcast content made available on public sector broadcasters’ official YouTube channels.

As technology has evolved away from individuals making recordings of programmes ERA has developed new ways for educational establishments to easily access and use recordings of broadcasts. The ERA Licence also allows:

  • Registration to use the ERA Video Streaming Platform and watching programmes or clips available through the service or through the Natural Curriculum .
  • Any subscriptions to exchange services such as ClickView, Planet eStream or Box of Broadcasts (BoB). An ERA Licence is required to access copies of any ERA repertoire on these platforms;

There are no limits on the amount of programmes or clips that are recorded or used and ERA has no record-keeping requirement for licensees.  However, there are some copyright limitations which apply and the following activities would not be permitted under the licence:

  • Uploading ERA licensed content onto public social platforms such as YouTube or Twitter
  • Adapting or tampering with the original broadcast (e.g. removing the soundtrack or altering the original meaning).
  • Incorporating ERA Licensed material into a new work for public consumption or display.
  • Any kind of commercial activity, for instance promotional activity.
  • Public performances.
  • Accessing ERA copies outside of the UK or making those copies available outside the UK.
