Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo (2014)

Synopsis

Tommo Peaceful and the rest of the company are posted to the trenches in Ypres. Tommo describes a two-day bombardment, at the end of which the company are first attacked and then mount a counter-attack. When Tommo gets back to his trench he discovers Charlie has not returned and as time passes he becomes increasingly fearful that his brother has died.
