The last four outright winners in the first round of this year's competition are in contention for the fourth place in the final. These include Margaret Spiller (civil servant) on Minoan Crete, Kevin Ashman (civil servant) on World cinema, 1960-1980, Jean Burke (secretary) on the plays of William Shakespeare and Paul Hancock (police inspector) on the works of C.S. Forrester.
