13: The Violent Mind | The Mind Machine

Duration: 1'28'49''

Synopsis

A woman with low blood sugar has violent thoughts; and a normally mild man, contaminated by insecticide, brutally murders a stranger. Usually, we count as criminals only those judged responsible for their actions - occasionally the courts accept that violent offenders are mentally ill. Professor Blakemore asks: are any of us entirely responsible for our actions? As we learn more about the structure and chemistry of the brain, should we admit there is no 'free will'?
